Shout-out to son Noah Ernst who set his alarm for 3am this morning to say Happy Father’s Day before I headed out for my insanely early hike. That was unexpected and very sweet.
I never expect anything for Father’s Day, because I intensely dislike the patriarchic style of demanding respect and thanks — which I think is the intention of putting a day like it on everybody’s calendar. In my mind, respect and thanks have to be earned, and cannot and should never be demanded, which makes me at least twice as happy when I do get an (always unexpected) acknowledgement. Particularly at 3am.
