So agreeing on a vocabulary between the parties in a distributed identity system is crucial, otherwise meaningful transactions are impossible. (If you think you can guess, try again with identity data from a person half way around the globe from where you are, written in a character set that you do not even recognize.)<\/p>\n<p>So we decided to sit down at NetMesh and compare the vocabularies of various identity projects and standards. We picked:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Liberty Alliance<\/li>\n<li>LDAP<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft CardSpace (aka InfoCard)<\/li>\n<li>Sxip (both V1 and V2)<\/li>\n<li>OpenID&#8217;s Simple Registration Extension<\/li>\n<li>Light-Weight Identity (LID)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are the results:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0.5in\"><a href=\"http:\/\/netmesh.org\/papers\/identity-vocabularies\/NetMesh-identity-vocabulary-comparison.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">A Comparison of Identity Vocabularies<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mappings of these kinds are always difficult, because no two schemas ever map well, but they are nevertheless quite interesting. Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>To discuss, I created <a href=\"http:\/\/lid.netmesh.org\/wiki\/Talk:Identity_Vocabularies_Comparison\" target=\"_blank\">a wiki page<\/a> where you can provide feedback; I&#8217;m sure we got some things wrong and missed others, so feel free to comment.
